Ceramic Tableware Display

we offer kiln firing services in queenstown.

We offer a small public kiln firing service for local Queenstown makers and hobby potters. This service is best suited to mugs, bowls, and small functional stoneware pieces.

Firings are done in our studio kiln with care, however all ceramics carry inherent risk — please read the guidelines carefully before sending us an email to book in.

Capacity depends on shape, height, and spacing required. Oversized or unusually shaped pieces may reduce capacity.

If you’re unsure how much space your work will take, feel free to email photos and measurements — we're happy to estimate the best option.

The Clay Club — Terms and Conditions

When you submit work to be fired at The Clay Club, you’re agreeing to the following:

What We Can Fire
To keep our kiln (and everyone’s work) safe:

  • We fire stoneware clay only

  • No porcelain, earthenware, unknown, or mixed clay bodies

  • No added materials (e.g. metal, wire, resin, paper clay, etc.)

  • Please tell us what clay and glaze products you’ve used

If something doesn’t meet these requirements, we may not be able to fire it.

Our Firing Schedule

  • Bisque: 1000°C (Cone 06)

  • Glaze: 1220°C (Cone 6)

All work is fired to these temperatures — no exceptions.

Glazing Guidelines
A few important things to avoid kiln damage:

  • Keep glaze off any surface that will touch the shelf

  • Avoid very thick glaze application

  • Let us know exactly what products you’ve used

Glazes can be unpredictable — results may vary, and that’s part of the magic (and risk) of ceramics.
If a piece causes damage to kiln shelves or equipment, repair or replacement costs will be passed on.

Getting Your Work Ready
Before dropping off:

  • Make sure pieces are completely dry

  • No damp clay or wet slip

  • Clean bottoms and foot rings (no glaze at all)

  • Ensure work is stable and not cracked or fragile

  • Label each piece clearly with your name

We may turn away pieces that aren’t ready to fire.

A Note on Risk
Ceramics doesn’t always go to plan — even when everything is done right.
By firing with us, you understand:

  • Breakage, warping, cracking, or glaze faults can happen

  • Colours and finishes may vary from expectations

  • We’re not able to offer refunds or replacements for fired work

We take care, but we can’t guarantee outcomes.

Timing

  • Most firings are completed within 3–5 weeks

  • This depends on kiln loads and studio scheduling

  • We’ll let you know when your work is ready

Pick-Up & Storage

  • Please collect your work within 1 week of notification

  • After 30 days, uncollected work may be cleared to make space

  • Storage is limited — we appreciate timely pick-up

Payment

  • Firing must be paid for in advance

  • Pricing is based on size per piece

  • Oversized or unusual work may need a custom quote

When We Might Say No
We may decline work that:

  • Risks damaging the kiln or other pieces

  • Contains unknown or unsafe materials

  • Hasn’t been properly prepared

  • Feels too risky to fire

Not Sure?
If you’re unsure about your piece, send us a photo before booking — we’re always happy to help.
